How to Open XPS Files in Windows 10/11

Microsoft launched the XPS format as an alternative to PDF with the release of Windows Vista. Although not brand-new, the XPS file format has never really taken off.

Therefore, Microsoft’s XPS (XML Paper Specification) files compete with Adobe’s PDF files. Even though PDF is more widely used than XPS, XPS is still in use today.

Microsoft chose to give up on XPS because it was never a viable file format, and with the April 2018 update, they removed the built-in XPS viewer from Windows.

1. First of all, open Windows search and type in Run. Open the Run dialog box from the list.

2. On the Run dialog box, type in xpsrchvw and enter.

The above command will activate the XPS viewer of your Windows 10 PC. You can now directly open the XPS files on your system.

3. Convert XPS files to PDF format

Making the conversion from XPS to PDF format is another useful way to open an XPS file on an unsupported operating system. You can convert XPS files to PDF format so that Adobe Reader can open them on your computer if you have Adobe Reader installed.
