How to Fix Chrome Automatically Refreshing Tabs

When Chrome keeps tabs open in the background, they may be frozen to conserve system resources. However, this can be frustrating if tabs automatically refresh when you return to them, consuming both time and bandwidth. If your computer has sufficient RAM, you might prefer that your inactive tabs stay active without refreshing. Here’s how to stop Chrome from automatically refreshing tabs:

1. Determine if Chrome is Refreshing a Specific Tab
Start by checking whether the problem is isolated to a specific tab or if it affects all open tabs. Sometimes, webmasters set pages to refresh at regular intervals to serve updated content. If only one tab is refreshing automatically, the issue might be with the website rather than Chrome itself. If all your tabs are refreshing, proceed with the following solutions.

2. Check if the Refresh Key is Pressed
If the Refresh key (F5) is stuck, it could cause pages to refresh automatically. Press the F5 key to see if it’s functioning correctly. If the key is stuck, try cleaning it. If the key isn’t stuck, consider whether your keyboard might be faulty.

3. Check and Remove Problematic Extensions
Extensions can sometimes cause tabs to refresh automatically. Extensions like auto-refreshers, ad-blockers, and certain security tools can force inactive tabs to reload when you return to them.

To check for problematic extensions:
1. Click the three dots in the top-right corner and navigate to Extensions > Manage Extensions.
2. Disable extensions one by one to identify the culprit. If disabling a specific extension resolves the problem, consider removing it.

4. Turn Off Chrome’s Memory Saver
Chrome’s Memory Saver feature freezes inactive tabs to free up system resources, which can cause them to refresh when you switch back to them. To disable this feature:
1. Click the three dots in the top-right corner and select Settings.
2. Go to the Performance tab.
3. Turn off the toggle next to Memory Saver.

5. Disable Auto-Discard for Inactive Tabs
If you don’t want to disable the Memory Saver entirely, you can prevent Chrome from auto-discarding specific tabs:
1. Open Chrome and go to `chrome://discards/`.
2. You’ll see a list of all tabs. Find the Auto Discardable column.
3. Uncheck the box next to any tab you don’t want Chrome to refresh automatically.

6. Use Chrome’s Task Manager to Free Up System Resources
Insufficient system resources, particularly RAM, can cause Chrome to auto-refresh tabs. To manage system resources:
1. Click the three dots in the top-right corner and go to More Tools > Task Manager.
2. In the Chrome Task Manager, check the Memory Footprint column to see which tabs are using the most RAM. Close the tabs that are consuming excessive resources.

7. Update the Chrome Browser
Outdated versions of Chrome may have bugs that cause tabs to auto-refresh. To update Chrome:
1. Click the three dots in the top-right corner and go to Help > About Google Chrome.
2. Chrome will check for updates and automatically download and install the latest version.

8. Reset Chrome Settings
If none of the above solutions work, you can try resetting Chrome to its default settings. This will remove any customizations and user settings but can resolve persistent issues:
1. Click the three dots in the top-right corner and select settings.
2. Go to the Reset Settings section.
3. Click Restore Settings to their original defaults and confirm by clicking Reset Settings.

These methods should help you stop Chrome from automatically refreshing tabs. learn more
