If you’re part of multiple WhatsApp groups or frequently receive videos, images, and other files, your phone’s storage can quickly fill up. To free up some space, it’s helpful to regularly review how much storage WhatsApp is using and delete unnecessary files. Fortunately, WhatsApp provides storage management tools for both Android and iOS that allow you to manage and reduce the app’s storage consumption.
1. Delete Files Received from WhatsApp
Follow these steps to remove files that are taking up space:
1. Open WhatsApp on your phone.
2. Tap the three dots in the top-right corner.
3. Select Settings from the menu.
4. Go to Storage and Data.
5. Tap on Manage Storage to see how much space WhatsApp is using.
6. Review the chats where most files have been exchanged. Tap on any chat to manually delete unwanted files.
7. You can also find and delete large files (over 5MB) by tapping on the Larger than 5MB section.
2. Disable Media Auto-Downloads
WhatsApp automatically downloads media files from chats, which can consume a lot of storage space. You can turn off this feature to save space. Here’s how:
1. Open WhatsApp.
2. Tap the three dots in the top-right corner and select Settings.
3. In Settings, tap on Storage and Data.
4. Under Media Auto-Download, select No Media for options like When using mobile data, When connected on WiFi, and When roaming.
This will stop WhatsApp from automatically downloading media files to your phone.

3. Enable Disappearing Messages
Another way to manage storage is by enabling the Disappearing Messages feature, which automatically deletes messages after a set period. Here’s how to enable it:
1. Open WhatsApp.
2. Tap the three dots in the top-right corner and select Settings.
3. Go to Privacy.
4. Tap on Default message timer.
5. Choose a time frame (such as 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days) for messages to automatically disappear.
By following these steps, you can significantly reduce WhatsApp’s storage usage on your Android or iOS device. If your phone is low on storage, make sure to clear unnecessary files from WhatsApp’s storage management page regularly. Learn More
