How to Prevent Spam Messages on iPhone

If you frequently share your phone number on online services and apps, your SMS inbox may already be inundated with hundreds of spam messages. Spam messages have become increasingly common, but there are effective ways to address them.

On your iPhone, you can easily get rid of spam messages by making some adjustments to the Messages app. If you want to eliminate SMS spam on your iPhone, here are a few changes you can make to the Messages app.

1. Enable the “Filter Unknown Senders” Feature

The “Filter Unknown Senders” feature on your iPhone sorts messages from people who are not in your contacts into a separate list. This is an excellent way to filter out spam messages on your iPhone. Here’s how to enable it:

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Once you’ve enabled the feature, messages from people not in your contacts will be placed in a separate list. If you want to check that list, follow these steps:

1. Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
2. Tap on “Filters” at the top left corner.
3. Select “Unknown Senders.”
4. You will be able to view the messages sent by contacts that are not saved on your iPhone.

2. Block SMS Spam from Specific Senders

If a specific sender is bombarding your inbox with spam messages, you can block that sender. Once blocked, no SMS from the blocked sender will arrive in your Messages inbox.

1. Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
2. Open the conversation with the number you wish to block.
3. Tap on the sender’s profile at the top.
4. Tap on “Info.”
5. Tap on “Block Caller.”

3. Disable Notifications for Unknown Senders

Even when the “Filter Unknown Sender” feature is turned on, you will still receive SMS notifications from those senders. It’s best to disable the notification from unknown senders as well.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Tap on “Notifications.”
3. Select “Messages.”
4. Tap on “Customize Notifications.”
5. Turn off the toggle next to “Unknown Sender.”
