How to Use Live Transcripts in Voice Memos on iPhone

If you have iOS 18, you no longer need a third-party app to convert speech into text. The latest iOS version supports audio transcription directly, allowing you to use either the Notes app or the Voice Memos app for this purpose.

Download and Install the iOS 18 Beta Update
Before you begin, make sure your iPhone is running the latest iOS 18 Developer or Public Beta. While the Public Beta offers more stability than the Developer Beta, it may still have some bugs that could affect your experience. If you want to proceed with using Live Transcript in the Voice Memos app, follow our guide on how to download and install the iOS 18 Public Beta.

Using Live Transcripts in the Voice Memos App on iPhone
Once you have installed the iOS 18 Public Beta update, you can start using the Live Transcript feature. You’ll need to adjust your language and region settings to English (United States) to enable this functionality.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Tap on General.
3. Select Language & Region.
4. On the Language & Region screen, tap Add Language.
5. Find and select English (US).
6. Then, tap on Region.
7. On the Select Region screen, choose United States.

Viewing Live Transcripts in the Voice Memos App
After changing your language and region settings, you can access live transcripts in the Voice Memos app. Here’s how to do it:

1. Open the Voice Memos app on your iPhone.
2. Record the audio you want to convert into text.
3. Once recording begins, swipe up on the recording interface to reveal additional options.
4. In the bottom left corner, tap the Transcript button.
5. The transcript will appear on the screen as you record your audio.
6. To generate a transcript of an existing recording, select the recording and tap the Waveform icon in the bottom left corner.
7. Then, tap the Transcript button in the bottom left corner.
8. To view the transcript, tap on the recording, then tap the three dots next to the recording name.
9. From the menu that appears, select View Transcript.
